Overview
When SAMHSA launched a national video storytelling initiative, the mission was as meaningful as it was complex: capture real, lived experiences of recovery from mental health and substance use challenges and share them with the world in a way that reduces stigma and encourages people to seek help. The work required far more than just pointing a camera at someone and hitting record.
Every step of the process called for care and intention, from navigating sensitive personal narratives and shifting leadership priorities to coordinating participant availability and meeting strict federal accessibility standards. In person and virtual interviews were conducted with a trauma informed, deeply respectful approach, ensuring that every person who shared their story felt seen and honored throughout the process. Those stories were then shaped into long and short form videos, fully compliant with Section 508 requirements and optimized for social and digital platforms. A comprehensive dissemination strategy was built alongside the content to make sure these authentic voices reached the audiences who needed to hear them most.
